Costumes

In our film we decided to use a man who would be a science teacher, but the 'typical' mad scientist, we know we that he's a little creepy from how he's acting...
But our cast member Laura doesn't think anything of it and carries on within her work.

We are only 100% certain on what the main character Mr Karloff, the killer is wearing as the other teens will be in either casual clothing or a "typical" school uniform.
We have decided that Mr Karloff with be wearing a scientists lab coat as we thought it would look effective when Laura is murdered and the deep red blood is squirting onto the white lab coat. We also think that his costume will help make his character look creepier as not many science teachers wear the traditional lab coats anymore so it makes him look aged and a little crazy.

Here is an example of the lab coat we would like to use in our movie.

We have dressed our villian in a white lab coat to link back to the hammer horror films, such as Dr Frankenstein in this image...

We have decided that the students in our film will all wear casual clothing. We decided this as in most horror films the teens in them are wearing casual clothes that give them their own identity whereas a uniform shows they are all equal to each other, the clothing will show which characters have power as they are wearing the more "stylish" clothing and are more popular.
The girls will either be wearing a casual dress or Jeans and a top, which the boys will also be wearing.

We have decided that Laura the first death will be wearing a flowery dress, showing she is cute and innocent and that the death is un called for. this is not the exact dress she will be wearing  but here is an example.

Characters

Freddie – Played by Kyle McCabe
Jessica – Played by Jade Crome
Sydney – Played by Holly Gowler
Laura – Played by Jade Harrington
Dr. Karloff - Played by Ben Wesley
The reason for having Freddie was as a homage to Freddie Kruegar from the film Friday the 13th. We used Sydney because she was the final girl in scream.
We chose the name Dr Karloff as it was the name of the famous actor Boris Karloff, who played the first Frankenstein monster. Frankenstein was made in 1931 by James Whale.

We chose those names as we feel that the audience can identify with the intertextuality references. we also decided upon these names as they are possibly the most famous name within the horror genre

Synopsis

·         The film starts off with a group of 8 in their business class after school because they have detention and in another class a student called named Laura is finishing science work with a ‘crazy scientist’ for a detention too.
·         A power cut happens and they are allowed to go home, its winter time and its dark around the school already – leaving the setting dark.
·         When walking out of the lesson, the class splits. The final girl – Jessica, doesn’t know which group to go with and the camera focuses on her and her expressions and it seems like something is wrong and by focusing on her we are showing that she is going to be the final girl. The group she goes with are her friends anyway.
·         They are talking and they decide to wait for their friend Laura who is in the science room, they plan to wait outside and as they do they see Dr Karloff stab Laura, he turns around and see Freddie, Jason, Jessica and Sydney waiting so he chases them – chasing them because they will tell someone what he’s just done.
·         They run straight to a hole in the fence leading to the woods.
·         3 of them get through, but the last one gets dragged back and killed.

My Bloody Valentine 2009

                             - Opening weekend - $21,241,456 in over two and a half thousand screens.

This is a remake of the classic 1981 john dunning My Bloody Valentine. The plot is twisted and elevated to make it a re-imagining and also to prevent viewers who saw the original being bored by a scene by scene remake. The film is famous for having an iconic image or the miner and is one of the only films to revolve around a vicious love triangle which elevates the plot and story-line making it a more interesting film to watch.

The film revolves around a young boy named Tom Hanniger who returns to his hometown ten years after the Valentines night massacre where 22 people were murdered coincidentally as he returns the feared murderer Harry Warden supposedly does too. However Harry Warden was killed, meaning there is a copy cat killer on the loose. Throughout the whole film Tom Hanniger is a suspect, however certain parts of the film make the viewer think that the copy cat killer is Axel Palmer, Sarah Palmers husband (who is also Tom Hannigers first love). The film contains many false scares the main one i am going to focus on is in the supermarket scene. Which is here...

<object width="853" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ka7o3Yft9Dk?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ka7o3Yft9Dk?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="853" height="505"></embed></object>

At the end of the scene you expect the Miner Murderer to be at the door she is facing her back too, the music stops and you anticipate him being behind the door, however our expectations are deceived and it turns out to be her husband - Axle. This technique of false scares is one commonly used through modern slasher movies to shock the audience and keep the suspense going throughout the film. In the original My Bloody Valentine the suspense deteriorated in a lack luster way.

The movie follows a typical horror movie structure, beginning with a death and ending with the "final girl" in this case the final girl is Sarah, you know all along its going to be her as she escapes the first killing.
Throughout the whole film the settings are dark and dreary and nothing positive happens at all for example when Sarah and Megan  are in the supermarket closing the lights are dim and are then turned off having spotlights from the fridges giving them a tiny source of light. The lighting of the buildings makes it look creepier for example in the mine here...

There are only tiny flood lights the fact that you have to have a torch to see makes it scarier as you are unable to see as much.
I think the movie is quite good and is the right movie for me too watch as it contains all of the elements i like however if people prefer more sci-fi horror or apocalyptic horrors then this is not the film for them.

Prom Night and Final Destination 3 comparison essay

In this essay I am going to compare and contrast the opening sequences of two horror films. The two horror films I have chosen are Prom Night and Final Destination 3. I have chosen these two films as they both have different story lines and have many differences between them.
Final destination 3 was made in 2006 and directed by James Wrong. The film begins with a group of teenagers in an amusement park. For a horror film the beginning credits are not scary for the viewers however you could say that it is quite freaky with the bright lights, devils, screams and gypsy fortune teller dolls rocking back and forth, this could trigger some viewers as they may have a phobia of dolls. There is also a pinball game, in which the ball rolls around and misses two holes, one reading “luck” and the other “fate” and finally falls into the one labelled “death”, if viewers have seen any of the other final destination films before they will realise that film visits each of those in words, which is showing them an insight into the film ahead. Once the main characters are introduced to the film “freaky” things start to happen for example when Wendy takes a photo of her friends on the ride named High Dive the V on the camera is shown as if the bulb has blown making it read High Die, however when she checks the ride again the V has been re-lit.
The first 20 minutes of the film is filled with many clichés with Wendy’s friend saying “what doesn’t kill you makes you strong” just as the roller coaster speeds past them. Many of the photos Wendy takes are linked to the deaths later on in the film, so you could call them premonitions, linking back to the Gypsies at the beginning. Before she enters the ride Wendy tells her boyfriend she feels like she is having “Déjà Vu” however she continues on and goes on the ride. As they are queuing you begin to see bad signs like bad connections between sections of the ride, an oil leak and so on, until they get onto the ride and it begins the oil leak causes the ride to become loose and dangerous and a guy filming the ride drops his camera and gets in caught into the ride causing the ride to de-rail and individuals each having their personal deaths. However these deaths do not actually take place they are simply a flash forward from Wendy, who has this premonition of the ride crash and manages to escape just in time before the ride actually crashes in real life. This film does not have any murderers, psychopaths, monsters, it is more supernatural and plays with fate.
The film Prom night created in 2008 and directed by Nelson McCormick. The beginning of this film is very different compared to Final Destination 3 instead of beginning with a flash forward it begins with a flashback or “dream”. This film is a lot darker and begins like a typical horror film with a girl entering an empty house and then realising she isn’t alone. Unlike Final destination Prom night is based on a psychopathic murderer who doesn’t stop at anything to try and get the girl he wants whereas Final destination is based more on people dying by fate than any other cause. In the first 10 minutes of Prom night 3 characters are murdered in the suburbs, 2 of which (brother and dad) are found by the daughter who then watches her mum get brutally murdered, this is a completely different beginning compared to Final destination one of the main reasons being that it starts with a flash forward while the other starts with a flashback however they are both good beginnings each building up suspense and anticipation. In comparison to the Final Destination Prom night has a much darker setting with eerie music playing in the background and typical suspense builders such as someone opening a cupboard and you expecting someone to be behind it whereas Final Destination gives you subtle hints on what is going to happen during the film and is also a lot more colourful and less eerie. Despite both films being teen horrors they are both different and the main thing they having in common is death and “The last girl” which is traditional in horror films.
