This is a remake of the classic 1981 john dunning My Bloody Valentine. The plot is twisted and elevated to make it a re-imagining and also to prevent viewers who saw the original being bored by a scene by scene remake. The film is famous for having an iconic image or the miner and is one of the only films to revolve around a vicious love triangle which elevates the plot and story-line making it a more interesting film to watch.

The film revolves around a young boy named Tom Hanniger who returns to his hometown ten years after the Valentines night massacre where 22 people were murdered coincidentally as he returns the feared murderer Harry Warden supposedly does too. However Harry Warden was killed, meaning there is a copy cat killer on the loose. Throughout the whole film Tom Hanniger is a suspect, however certain parts of the film make the viewer think that the copy cat killer is Axel Palmer, Sarah Palmers husband (who is also Tom Hannigers first love). The film contains many false scares the main one i am going to focus on is in the supermarket scene. Which is here...

<object width="853" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ka7o3Yft9Dk?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ka7o3Yft9Dk?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="853" height="505"></embed></object>

At the end of the scene you expect the Miner Murderer to be at the door she is facing her back too, the music stops and you anticipate him being behind the door, however our expectations are deceived and it turns out to be her husband - Axle. This technique of false scares is one commonly used through modern slasher movies to shock the audience and keep the suspense going throughout the film. In the original My Bloody Valentine the suspense deteriorated in a lack luster way.

The movie follows a typical horror movie structure, beginning with a death and ending with the "final girl" in this case the final girl is Sarah, you know all along its going to be her as she escapes the first killing.
Throughout the whole film the settings are dark and dreary and nothing positive happens at all for example when Sarah and Megan  are in the supermarket closing the lights are dim and are then turned off having spotlights from the fridges giving them a tiny source of light. The lighting of the buildings makes it look creepier for example in the mine here...

There are only tiny flood lights the fact that you have to have a torch to see makes it scarier as you are unable to see as much.
I think the movie is quite good and is the right movie for me too watch as it contains all of the elements i like however if people prefer more sci-fi horror or apocalyptic horrors then this is not the film for them.

  1. Paragraph 3 - if you're going to say it's a common convention of slashers, you need to back this up with at least one other film example.

Consider what the minimal lighting might also represent (characters 'in the dark', no hope, death - light at the end of the tunnel...)
